Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. Matthew 28:19-20
And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. 2Timothy 2:2
But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded. Titus 2:1-6
Our Lord’s instructions are clear. Every believer should strive to win others to Christ and then to disciple (mentor) them, that is to help them learn more about the Lord and to aid them in their service to the Lord. In the same vein newly born again believers should seek to be mentored by more mature believers. This process of discipleship takes place in several ways at Koolau Baptist Chruch.
- Fellowship at Church
Just in casual conversations and interaction with other believers one may grow. A mature believer speaks of scriptural principles with the new Christian and thereby the new Christian grows. This happens all the time.
- Planned One on One or Couple to Couple Meetings
At Koolau Baptist Church we have a program of matching up a mature believer with a new believer for the purpose of studying a series of lessons written by Pastor Woodfin entitled Knowing and Growing in the Christian Life. Once a week the mentor meets one hour to study this series with the new believer. In some cases a husband and wife may mentor another husband and wife. In this series fundamental Bible doctrines and basic practical lessons that every believer needs to learn are covered.
- Occasional Scheduled Short Lesson Series
Just to give a boost to new believers there are scheduled occasional lesson series with usually 4-7 lessons that target specific subjects such as parenting, How to study the Bible, etc.
- Connecting Points (Sunday School)
This is our continuous discipleship ministry. Every individual can plug into a class with a familiar group of believers to study God’s Word. It is also a great place for mature believers to invite newcomers to get involved and start growing in the things of the Lord.
